Bagual is a zafu (meditation cushion) design for Argentinian brand PEMA. The design embraces the zafu as an energy capsule, wrapping it inside an iconic hexagonal volume in which interlocking leather strips create an elegant weave despite the raw textures resulting from the tanning and dyeing processes. The friction that occurs during these transformation processes is read as an exchange of energy exposed by the surface’s patina, thus giving it a sober character and making it easy to associate with nature. A handle placed on one of the prism faces eases its transport, while the metallic zipper hidden under a flap, secures and protects the cushion filled with dry rice husk.
PEMA is a young brand born in Córdoba, Argentina, which seeks to bring the practice of meditation closer to new consumers through products made with upcycled materials derived from the leather industry. Thanks to a careful selection and excellent artisan craftsmanship, material that does not meet the aesthetic quality standards for the conventional industry is elevated through its use on contemporary and honest morphologies.
